Muted Till It's True

Context

Zechariah is a priest. Old, faithful, married to Elizabeth, who is also old, also faithful, and they have no kids. In their world a barren womb was the loudest sermon nobody asked to hear. They had prayed about it for decades, long enough to start asking for smaller things.

Then his name gets drawn. Once in a lifetime your name gets picked to enter the Holy Place and burn the incense. Thousands of priests, one ticket, and it lands on him.

Story

He walks into the inner room and lights the incense. He is not alone. An angel is standing by the altar, on the right side, not in a dream, not in a vision. Gabriel tells him the prayer has been heard, Elizabeth will have a son, name him John, and he will walk ahead of the Messiah.

And the priest who spent his whole career teaching other people about the God of the impossible asks for proof. How can I be sure, I am old, my wife is old. So Gabriel answers.

"And because you didn't believe me, you're not gonna speak again until the day it happens."

Zechariah walks back out to bless the waiting crowd and nothing comes. He goes home silent. Months later Elizabeth is pregnant. The baby comes, and only when he writes his name is John does his tongue unlock that same second.

What We Learn

Zechariah was not an outsider to God. He was the insider, the credentialed guy, and the first thing out of his mouth in front of an angel was a request for receipts.

Sometimes the person hardest to surprise with God is the one who has been working for him the longest.

Maybe the silence was not punishment. Maybe it was the only way he was finally going to listen.
