Context
James and John are two of Jesus's closest disciples, and he nicknamed them the Sons of Thunder. That is not the name you give the chill guys in the group. Type-A, competitive, loyal to a fault.
Right now Jesus has set his face toward Jerusalem. He knows what waits at the end of this road, and he is walking toward it on purpose.
Story
He sends messengers ahead into a Samaritan village to get things ready for the night. The village says no. Not "we're full" — just, you're headed to Jerusalem, so we don't want you.
The brothers clock the rejection immediately. They walk up to Jesus with biblical precedent loaded in the chamber, quoting Elijah.
"Lord, do you want us to call down fire from heaven to consume them?"
Jesus turns around and rebukes them. The answer is no. And then the part that lands hardest: they just keep walking. Same road, same direction, on to another village.
What We Learn
The rejection feels personal. The protective rage feels holy. And there is always a verse to back it up if you go looking for one.
But Jesus is walking toward a cross. The fire was never the assignment.
