They Saw Him

Context

Two people in this story have made waiting their whole life. Simeon is an old man the Holy Spirit promised one specific thing: he wouldn't die before he saw the Messiah with his own eyes. Not a vague good feeling. A specific face.

Anna is a prophetess, eighty-four, widowed young and never remarried. She lives at the temple. Fasting, praying, refusing to leave the courts for decades.

Story

One ordinary morning a young couple walks in. A teenage mother, a working-class carpenter, carrying two pigeons — the offering you bring when you can't afford a lamb. They're nobody. Invisible.

Then Simeon clocks them across the courtyard. Something in him locks on. He walks straight over, lifts the eight-day-old baby out of Mary's arms, and starts weeping.

"Lord, now you can let your servant go in peace. My eyes have seen your salvation."

Before Mary and Joseph can even process it, here comes Anna, shuffling across the floor, the temple's longest-running regular. She sees the baby and she knows. She starts thanking God out loud and pulling aside everyone still hoping for redemption.

What We Learn

Faithfulness rarely looks like one dramatic moment of trust. It looks like Simeon climbing the same temple steps for the ten-thousandth time. It looks like Anna fasting through another sunrise where nothing happens.

And then a poor teenager walks in with a baby.

They saw him. And then they could go.
