Context
Jesus tells this parable to people who assume there will always be more time. A wedding is coming, the bridegroom is delayed, and ten bridesmaids have one job: keep their lamps ready for the moment he arrives.
Story
Five bring extra oil. Five bring their lamps and figure what they have will be enough. Then the night stretches long, everybody gets tired, and all ten fall asleep.
"He's here! Come out and meet him!"
At midnight, they wake up fast. The wise bridesmaids top off their lamps and go meet the groom. The others realize their light is going out, run into the dark looking for oil, and miss the only moment that counted. By the time they come back, the door is already closed.
What We Learn
Readiness is not something you can borrow when the moment finally arrives. Jesus is naming the kind of faith that gets packed while life still feels quiet, before the panic, before the deadline, before the door.
Keep the lamp full now.
