Coats, Then Coins

Context

It's Passover week, and Jerusalem is packed to five times its normal size. Pilgrims, Roman soldiers, everyone on edge. The city has watched would-be kings show up before, gather a crowd, and get crushed by Rome. So when a teacher from Nazareth heads for the gate, people are watching to see which version of that story this will be.

Story

He doesn't pick a warhorse. He picks a borrowed donkey, the animal a farmer uses to haul vegetables to market. He climbs on, and the road erupts. Coats hit the dirt, branches wave, the whole street becomes a rolling green carpet. The crowd is cheering for a war they think he's about to start. They see a general. He knows he's a lamb.

Then the parade ends, and watch where it ends. He walks straight into the temple and finds a market: money-changers, cages of doves, a pop-up economy fleecing the poorest pilgrims right at the door of God's house. The gentle teacher looks at all of it. And he flips the tables.

"My house will be called a house of prayer, but you're making it a den of robbers."

Coins scatter, doves burst loose, the scammers scramble after rolling money on their knees. Then the blind and the kids start showing up, and he heals them right there in the chaos he just made. When the officials demand he silence the children's singing, he won't.

What We Learn

We like to split Jesus into two people: the one who blesses children, and a separate, angrier one who'd never make a scene. But it's one man, one afternoon. The tenderness and the table-flip come from the same heart.

His anger wasn't losing control. It was refusing to look away while the powerless got robbed in God's name.

So which tables do you walk past every day, the thing everyone's decided is just how it works? He didn't.
