Not What I Want

Context

It's the last night, and Jesus already knows how it ends. Not a vague dread. He knows the man coming to betray him and roughly the hour he'll arrive.

Gethsemane is an olive grove just outside the city. The quiet place, the after-dinner place. Tonight it's where he goes to fall apart before anyone watches him die.

Story

He brings three friends and tells them, straight out, that the grief in him is heavy enough to kill him on its own. Then he walks further in, alone, and falls on his face in the dirt.

This is the floor-of-the-bathroom version of prayer. The one nobody posts.

"Father, if there's any way, take this cup away from me."

In the same breath he adds the hardest seven words a person can pray: but not what I want, what you want. He prays it three times. The cup doesn't move. Heaven stays quiet.

So he stands up, the shaking gone, and walks toward the torches anyway.

What We Learn

We're taught that enough faith gets the cup taken. But Jesus prayed it perfectly, face in the dirt, and the cup stayed full.

• Unanswered prayer isn't proof you lacked faith.

• The yes he got wasn't the yes he asked for. It was strength to walk into the no.

And you get up off the floor, and walk toward the morning anyway.
