Context
Paul has been shown a vision so intense he can barely describe it. He comes back from the third heaven changed, but also carrying what he only calls a thorn in his flesh.
He never names it, and that vagueness matters. The point is not what the thorn is. The point is what Paul does when it keeps grinding him down.
Story
Paul prays because he knows God can remove it. This is the man who has seen heaven, planted churches across the empire, and survived prison, shipwreck, and stoning, and he is still asking for one specific mercy.
Nothing changes. So he prays again. Same God, same ache, same silence.
Then he prays a third time, going back to the same door after being turned away twice. That is when God answers, but not with the removal Paul asked for.
my grace is enough for you. My power is made perfect in your weakness.
The thorn stays. Paul does not. God gives him grace strong enough to keep standing with the thing still in the room.
What We Learn
Paul asked for removal. God gave him enough grace to remain.
That answer can be harder than no, because the pain is still there and trust has to happen before relief does. But this story says grace is not only what lifts the burden. Sometimes grace is what keeps you breathing while you carry it.
