Context
Paul is waiting in Athens, the city of elite debate and endless takes. While he walks around, he sees idols everywhere, including one backup altar marked "to an unknown god."
That altar is what pulls him from sightseeing into witness.
Story
Paul starts in the synagogue, then moves into the marketplace, talking with anyone who'll engage. Philosophers clock him, mock him as a "seed-picker," then bring him to the Areopagus, the public stage for Athens' biggest ideas.
"Athenians, I see how religious you are. I was walking around your city, looking at your objects of worship, and I saw an altar with the inscription, 'to an unknown god.' What you worship as unknown — that's what I'm here to tell you about."
He doesn't flatten their culture before he speaks. He reads their altar, quotes their poets, then points them toward the God who can't be carved from stone and the risen man God has appointed.
The room splits. Some laugh. Some stall. A few believe, including Dionysius and Damaris.
What We Learn
Paul doesn't win Athens by sounding louder than Athens. He listens closely enough to start where their questions already are.
Witness can look like learning the room before asking anyone to walk with you.
Maybe the open door is the altar everyone else ignored.
