Context
Ephesus is not just a religious city. It is an economy built around Artemis, her temple, and the pilgrims who buy silver shrine souvenirs from men like Demetrius.
Paul has been teaching there for two years, and the gospel is starting to hit the marketplace. People are turning from idols so publicly that the old money can feel the ground move.
Story
Demetrius gathers the silversmiths and names the real issue first: Paul is bad for business. Then he wraps that fear in devotion, warning that Artemis herself is being disrespected.
"Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!"
The chant spreads faster than the facts. A whole crowd floods the theater, even though most of them do not know why they came. Paul wants to step into it, but his friends hold him back.
After two hours, the city clerk finally brings the room back to reality. If there is a complaint, take it to court. If there is not, Rome may call this exactly what it is: a riot with no good reason.
What We Learn
Not every loud alarm is a holy concern. Sometimes a threatened paycheck learns religious language because it needs other people to panic with it.
When truth puts pressure on a profitable system, watch what gets called sacred.
