Context
Lystra is a small Roman colony in central Turkey, full of people who already know an old local story about gods visiting in disguise. So when Paul and Barnabas arrive preaching Jesus, the town is not a blank slate. They have categories ready, and they are about to use the wrong ones.
Story
Paul sees a man who has never walked and tells him to stand. The man jumps up, and the whole crowd erupts in a language Paul and Barnabas do not understand.
"The gods have come down to us in human form."
The crowd names Barnabas Zeus and Paul Hermes. The priest of Zeus starts bringing bulls and garlands for a sacrifice, and Paul and Barnabas have to rip their clothes and beg them to stop. They are not gods. They are just men pointing to the living God.
Then, days later, enemies from nearby cities arrive and start talking to the same crowd. The worship flips into violence. The people who almost sacrificed to Paul pick up stones, leave him for dead, and drag him outside the city.
The disciples gather around him like they are preparing for a burial. Then Paul gets up, walks back into the city, and leaves for Derbe the next morning.
What We Learn
Crowds can misname you in both directions. They can make you bigger than you are one day and disposable the next.
Paul's steadiness is not rooted in either version. He does not build his life on being adored, and he does not let rejection write the final word over him.
He just gets up and walks back in.
