The Ring Fits

Context

Joseph is seventeen when his own brothers sell him off. He's thirty when this morning happens. In between: framed by his boss's wife, dropped into an Egyptian dungeon with no trial, no lawyer, no embassy to call. The one man who could have vouched for him walked free two years ago, promised to remember, and forgot.

Two years of forgotten. That's where the story finds him.

Story

Across the city, Pharaoh can't sleep. Two dreams the same night that won't leave him alone. Seven fat cows eaten by seven skinny ones. Seven plump grain heads swallowed by shriveled ones. He calls in his whole magician department, the in-house consulting bench, and nobody can crack it.

Then the cupbearer remembers. Like a guy who finds a two-year-old voicemail he never returned.

They yank Joseph out of the cell, shave him, throw fresh clothes on him, and walk him into a marble hallway. One hour ago he was a prisoner. Pharaoh looks at him and says he's heard Joseph can interpret dreams. And Joseph, in the most important room of his life, hands the credit away.

"I cannot do this. God will give Pharaoh the answer he needs."

Then he reads both dreams cold. Seven years of abundance, seven of famine, back to back. And he keeps going, hands Pharaoh a whole strategy nobody asked for. The throne room goes quiet. Pharaoh pulls the signet ring off his own finger and slides it onto Joseph's.

What We Learn

Joseph didn't network his way into that room. The cupbearer forgot him for two years and remembered him for thirty seconds, and those thirty seconds were the whole door.

But notice what he was doing in the meantime. Running a prison nobody could see, faithful for an audience of two forgotten men. When the door finally opened, he didn't scramble to become someone. He just walked through as who he already was.

Most of us are waiting for the door. Joseph reminds us what to do in the hallway.
