He Braced for a War

Context

Jacob has been running for twenty years. The last time he saw his brother Esau, Esau wanted him dead, and not without reason. Jacob had stolen the blessing, faked the voice, conned their old blind father.

Now he's coming home with two wives, eleven kids, herds of livestock, and a limp from wrestling an angel the night before. And he is convinced this is the day he dies.

Story

Jacob sees the dust first. Four hundred men. That's an army. He splits his family into groups so half can run if the front half is attacked, and sends ahead waves of goats and sheep and camels, frantically trying to pay down a twenty-year debt.

Then he walks out front. Alone. Limping. He bows seven times before his brother even gets close, like he's approaching a foreign king instead of the boy he shared a womb with.

Esau closes the distance fast. Jacob can't read his face. He braces. And then Esau runs, not at him with a sword, but to him, with his arms open. He throws his arms around Jacob's neck, kisses him, and they both start sobbing in the dust.

Jacob tries to hand over the gifts anyway. Esau won't take them.

"I already have enough, my brother. Keep what's yours."

My brother. After everything.

What We Learn

Jacob spent the whole night before wrestling God for a blessing. He thought the angel was the hard part. The hard part was the brother.

The reunion he dreaded for twenty years lasted maybe ten seconds before it fell apart into tears. All that rehearsal, all that strategy, and what actually meets him is a hug.

Sometimes the conversation you've been losing sleep over isn't the war you trained for. Sometimes it's just someone running toward you.
