Came Down the Stairs

Context

By the time Jacob lies down for the night, he's a fugitive. He lied to his blind father, stole his brother's blessing, and now Esau wants him dead. So he's running hundreds of miles to relatives he barely knows, with nothing but the clothes he's wearing and a guilty conscience.

Home isn't safe anymore. He made sure of that himself.

Story

The first night on the road, the sun drops and there's no inn, no tent, no one waiting up. Jacob grabs a stone, sticks it under his head, and lies down in the open. This is the lowest he's ever been. Liar, fugitive, alone.

Then he dreams. A stairway rises from the dirt right next to him all the way into the sky, angels moving up and down, and at the very top stands God. Jacob doesn't climb a single step. He's flat on the ground, asleep, drooling on a rock. God is the one who shows up, and he doesn't lead with a rebuke. He leads with a promise: this land is yours, your kids will outnumber the dust, I am with you and I will not leave you. To the liar. On the run. With no apology recorded anywhere.

"whoa, God was in this place and I had no idea"

Jacob wakes up stunned, stands his rock pillow up like a monument, pours oil on it, and names the spot Bethel, house of God.

What We Learn

You don't have to climb back into God's good graces. That was never the deal.

He didn't climb to God. God came down the stairs to him.
