Come Close to Me

Context

Before any of the famous parts — the dreams, the prison, the palace — Joseph is just the favorite kid in a family already cracking under the weight of it. His father gives him the coat, the fancy one that says this is the son who matters. And Joseph, seventeen and not reading the room, keeps telling everyone about the dreams where his whole family bows down to him.

His ten older brothers are standing right there, clocking every word.

Story

One day the brothers spot that coat coming across the field, and something snaps. They rip it off, throw him in a dry pit, and sit down to eat lunch while he screams at the bottom. A caravan rolls by, and they sell their own brother for the going rate of a used farm animal. Then they dip the coat in goat's blood and let their father grieve a son who's alive in another country.

The family group chat just got their golden child kidnapped, and the cover story is a coat. They keep that secret for over twenty years.

Then a famine hits, and ten desperate travelers show up at the Egyptian official running the food supply, bowing low to buy grain. It's his brothers. They have no idea who he is. He recognizes them instantly — and he's the one holding all the leverage.

He tests them, and this time they don't throw another brother under the bus to save themselves. That's the moment something breaks in him. He clears the room of every witness and just weeps, loud enough that the Egyptians outside hear it through the walls.

"Come close to me."

Not kneel. Not explain yourselves. Come close.

What We Learn

We get forgiveness backwards a lot. We treat it like a feeling we have to wait for, or a stamp that says what they did was fine. Joseph proves it's neither — he names it plainly, you sold me, and refuses to let the naming be the end of the sentence.

It doesn't mean it stopped hurting. You don't weep that hard over something that healed clean. He just decided the wound wouldn't run the room.

Forgiveness isn't pretending it didn't happen. It's deciding it doesn't get the last word.
