The Skin Told the Truth

Context

Every Bible story has a main character and a sidekick. This one has a sidekick who tries to write himself a side hustle. Gehazi is Elisha's right-hand man. A Syrian general named Naaman has just been healed of leprosy, free of charge, and Elisha flatly refused to take a cent for it. The cure was a gift. That refusal is the whole hinge of what happens next.

Story

Gehazi watches Naaman's caravan roll out, does the math on all that silver walking away, and something in him clicks. So he runs. He chases the general down, invents a story about two prophets who just showed up needing supplies, and asks for a little silver and some clothes. Naaman, grateful, gives him double. Gehazi stashes the loot at the house and strolls back in like nothing happened.

Then Elisha asks where he's been.

"Nowhere. Your servant didn't go anywhere."

Elisha isn't buying it. He names the silver, the clothes, the olive groves Gehazi was already spending in his head. And the leprosy that just left Naaman lands on Gehazi instead. He walks out of the room white as snow.

What We Learn

Gehazi's sin wasn't wanting nice things. It was charging admission to something God gave away on purpose. The cover-up was louder than the theft, too. Elisha goes after the lie before the silver.

The silver stayed hidden in the house. The skin told the truth the mouth wouldn't.
