Empty Jars

Context

A widow shows up at the prophet Elisha's door with hours left on the clock. Her husband, one of Elisha's circle, has died, and the debt didn't die with him. In ancient Israel a creditor could legally take your children as slaves until the bill was paid. Her two boys are next.

She has nothing to bargain with but a small flask of oil.

Story

Elisha doesn't comfort her or pray over her. He asks one almost-rude question.

"What do you have in your house?"

Her honest answer: nothing, except that one small jar. So he tells her to borrow empty jars from the neighbors, as many as she can, shut the door, and start pouring. She walks door to door collecting other people's empty pots, comes home, and tips the little flask. Oil keeps coming. One jar, then another, her son handing her the next, until he says there aren't any more. And the oil stops the moment the last jar is full.

She sells it, clears the debt, and her family lives on the rest.

What We Learn

God didn't make oil out of thin air. He multiplied what she already had, and the only ceiling was how many empty jars she went and asked for.

The hardest part wasn't the pouring. It was the knocking, admitting at each door who she was and asking for empty things, trusting they'd come back full.

So maybe the question isn't whether God can fill the jar. Maybe it's how many doors you're willing to knock on first.
