Spread It Out

Context

Assyria is the playground bully of the ancient world, except the bully skins kings alive and stacks heads outside city walls. They've already erased the northern kingdom. Now they're at the gates of Jerusalem.

Hezekiah is king of the smaller, southern Judah, twenty-five years into a quiet, decent reign. The Assyrian king Sennacherib does not care about any of that.

Story

A delegation rolls up to the wall. Sennacherib's chief of communications stands outside and shouts, in Hebrew, loud, so the regular people can hear every word. It's a TED Talk in psychological warfare. Did the gods of those other cities save them? Why would your God be different? Surrender now, or eat your own children before winter.

Hezekiah doesn't call a war council or workshop a comeback. He tears his clothes, puts on sackcloth, and walks into the temple. Then a second letter comes, uglier, naming God by name.

He reads it once. Then he carries the physical scroll into the temple and just unrolls it. Flat. On the floor.

"Save us, so that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that you alone are God."

Notice the pivot. Not save us so we live. Save us so they know who you are. That night the Assyrian camp empties, and Sennacherib goes home to be killed by his own sons.

What We Learn

Most of us, when the threatening letter shows up, read it three times, forward it, draft a response, re-read it at three in the morning. We metabolize it. We negotiate with it in our heads.

Hezekiah carries the actual document to God. Not a summary, not his feelings about it. The raw thing, no spin. Because then he's not in charge of how the story gets told.
