The Hills on Fire

Context

Elisha is the prophet driving the king of Aram up the wall. Every time Aram plans a sneak attack on Israel, Elisha knows the coordinates and warns the king to move his camp. The king is sure he has a leak in his ranks. He doesn't. It's the prophet, who hears what enemies whisper in their own bedrooms.

So Aram stops chasing the secrets and goes after the man. They surround the little town of Dothan in the dark.

Story

It's barely light out. Elisha's servant steps outside half-asleep to do the morning chore, and he looks up. The whole town is ringed by horses, chariots, a full Aramean army. Like waking up to find your building circled by SWAT, and they're here for the guy you live with.

He runs back inside, freaking out. Elisha doesn't even get up fast.

"Don't be afraid. The ones with us are way more than the ones with them."

There's one of them and one army outside. So Elisha prays, and it isn't a prayer for rescue. It's "Open his eyes, Lord. Let him see." And the kid sees the hills full of fire, horses and chariots already standing between Elisha and every blade. The angel army was there the whole time.

What We Learn

The prayer wasn't send help. The help was already there. The prayer was let him see what's already here.

So much of what scares us is the math we do with our eyes closed. One of me. One impossible thing. Zero visible help.

The angels weren't summoned. They were already there.
