Context

Joshua is on a winning streak nobody saw coming. Jericho's walls fell. Ai went up in smoke. Word is racing across Canaan that this desert nation rolls through fortified cities like they're cardboard.

Every king west of the Jordan is sharpening swords to fight back. But one city, Gibeon, does the math differently. They know the rule — locals get wiped out, far-off nations get to negotiate. So they decide to lie about where they live.

Story

A delegation rolls up to Israel's camp in full costume. Moldy bread. Cracked wineskins. Sandals worn to threads. They lead with the geography lie before they even say their names.

When the lieutenants squint and ask how they know these guys aren't local, the Gibeonites point at the props — basically the bronze-age version of showing the timestamps on your receipts. And they only name-drop the old miracles, Egypt and Sihon and Og, nothing about Jericho, because the recent wins would collapse the timeline.

Israel inspects the bread. Handles the wineskins. Does real due diligence. Then comes the line the whole chapter pivots on.

"The men of Israel took some of their provisions, but did not ask counsel from the LORD."

Joshua cuts the deal and swears an oath. Three days later the truth lands: Gibeon is a half-day's walk away. They're neighbors. The oath holds anyway, built on a lie, and the Gibeonites become Israel's woodcutters for good.

What We Learn

It wasn't the lie that wrecked them. The Gibeonites were always going to lie — that was their best move. The wreck was inspecting everything and never asking the one Person in the room who knew the truth.

That's the version of the mistake most of us actually make. Not refusing to check. Checking carefully, on the wrong layer. Reading the email three times, re-running the numbers, never once asking God what we can't see.

You can examine the bread and still miss the trap.
