The Line in the Dirt

Context

Joshua is a hundred and ten years old and he knows he's about to die. He's the man who took over from Moses, who walked the people across a river that wasn't supposed to be walkable into a land that wasn't supposed to be theirs. Now he calls every tribe to Shechem for one last meeting.

He's basically the retiring CEO calling one last all-hands, and he is not in the mood for hedging.

Story

He reminds them where they came from. Their ancestors served other gods, across the river, back in Egypt. The God who pulled them out of all that was a rescue, not a default setting. Then he draws a line in the dirt and hits them with the line.

"Choose this day whom you will serve."

If serving the Lord seems bad to them, fine, pick something else. Then he plants his foot: but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord. Not we'll think about it. Not we'll see how the year goes.

The people answer yes, and Joshua pushes back. You can't, he says. You're not able to serve him. They double down. He makes them say it a second time, then a third, then sets up a stone as a witness, because he knows how humans work.

What We Learn

Most of us think we already chose. We showed up, we sang the songs, we posted the verse. But Joshua isn't asking about Sunday. He's asking about the small gods on the other side of our river. The career one. The approval one. The phone one.

Worship isn't where you stand on Sunday. It's whose voice you obey on Tuesday.
