Twelve Stones

Context

Forty years of wandering, and Israel is camped on the wrong side of the Jordan. The generation that walked out of Egypt is buried in the sand behind them. The ones left have heard the stories — the sea splitting, bread from the sky — but they've never seen any of it themselves.

Moses is gone. Joshua leads now. And the river is in flood stage, the kind of fast water that drowns livestock and swallows wagons. This is the welcome mat to the promised land.

Story

Joshua sends the priests in first. Not the soldiers, not the strongest men — the priests, carrying the holiest thing they own straight into water that's trying to kill them. The second their feet touch it, the river upstream stops and the riverbed goes dry. Two million people walk across.

Then God does something strange. Before everyone's even on the far bank, he tells Joshua to pick twelve men and send them back into the middle of the dry river. To get rocks. One big stone per tribe, hauled up and stacked at Gilgal.

"When your kids ask you what these stones mean — and they will ask — you tell them the water stood up. You tell them we walked across."

The priests come out last. The river comes back. The stones stay.

What We Learn

The stones weren't a monument to the water. Rivers part and go back to normal. They were a monument to the One who stopped it — built because God knew that in ten, twenty years the miracle would start to feel like somebody else's story.

Whatever your version of twelve stones is — a journal entry, a voice memo, a date circled on a calendar — set it down somewhere you have to walk past. You'll need it on the days you forget you ever crossed.
