A Different Question

Context

Jacob is on the run. His brother wants him dead, so his mom sends him hundreds of miles to her brother Laban's house in Haran with one job — find a wife from the family and lay low. He arrives a momma's boy with a guilty conscience and no money to his name.

Story

He's the last person you'd expect to fall in love at a well. But Jacob rolls up, moves a giant stone off the well mouth for a girl named Rachel, kisses her cheek, and bursts into tears. He's smitten on the spot. So he offers Laban seven years of free labor as a dowry for her.

Seven years pass. The wedding feast comes — wine, low lights, a veiled bride led to the tent. Jacob wakes up the next morning, looks over, and it's Leah, the older sister. Laban shrugs and says the younger can't marry before the older.

"Information that would've been useful seven years ago."

Then Laban offers a new deal: finish the week with Leah, then work another seven years for Rachel too. Fourteen years total for the woman he came for. And Jacob says yes. He stays.

What We Learn

Jacob spent seven years counting toward one outcome and woke up to a different one in his life. Not the wrong person in some cosmic sense — Leah's line runs all the way to Jesus — but on that morning, in that tent, she was not the answer to the question he'd been asking.

You worked toward the job and got handed the marriage. You worked toward the baby and got handed a different kind of waiting. The Bible doesn't say Jacob was happy about it. It says he stayed. Sometimes that's the only honest verb left.
