The Score Sheet

Context

Jacob has two wives, and they're sisters. He worked seven years for Rachel, the one he loved, then got tricked into marrying her older sister Leah first, then worked seven more years to get Rachel too. Now they're all under one roof. One sister adored. The other one tolerated.

And in this house, the only currency that counts is sons.

Story

Leah, the unloved one, has babies first. Four sons in a row, and she names each of them after her ache. Reuben means the Lord has seen my misery. Levi means maybe now my husband will get attached. You can hear her trying to climb out of the bottom of the score sheet, one baby at a time.

Rachel, the favorite, has nothing. Empty crib, empty arms. She finally cracks and demands children from Jacob, who panics and yells back that he isn't God. So both sisters start handing their servants to Jacob to count more sons for their side.

It gets stranger. They barter a night with their shared husband in exchange for some fertility plants. The whole chapter is two wronged women turning into rivals.

Then, quietly, the text turns.

"God remembered Rachel."

She has Joseph, the child she'd been waiting on the entire time.

What We Learn

Love doesn't get handed out based on points, no matter how clean a ledger you keep. The score sheet was the trap, not Jacob, not their father. Both sisters were genuinely wronged, and both lost themselves trying to win something that was never up for grabs.

What stops me is that one line, God remembered Rachel. As if remembering had always been on the way.

Maybe that's what we're all still waiting on. To be remembered. Not rewarded.
