Toward the Crib

Context

Athaliah is the only woman who ever sat on the throne of Judah, and she got there by killing every grandchild she had. She's the daughter of Ahab and Jezebel, married into the royal house of David to seal an alliance. When her husband and then her son die, she does the math: the bloodline is now a row of little boys, and she's the only adult with a claim.

So she picks up the one tool her mother taught her and starts swinging.

Story

Her people sweep the palace room by room, pulling the little princes out of every hiding place. The whole royal line, erased in an afternoon. But down a corridor, a woman named Jehosheba, aunt to all these boys, sees a one-year-old asleep in a crib. His name is Joash.

She picks him up. She grabs his nurse too. She walks them into a side room and shuts the door.

Her husband is the high priest, so the temple becomes the one place the queen can't search without it becoming a religious incident. For six years a toddler grows up inside that complex, kept quiet during state visits, while his grandmother sits on his father's throne thinking she got them all.

Then Joash turns seven. On a Sabbath the priest crowns him in the courtyard, guards raise their swords, and Athaliah comes running at the noise.

"(She is, in fact, the treason.)"

They march her out the horse gate. Joash reigns for forty years.

What We Learn

Athaliah assumed the math was the math. Count the heirs, subtract them, sit down. She never accounted for a woman in a hallway deciding in under a minute, or a temple keeping a secret it had no obligation to keep.

God preserving a promise almost never looks like fireworks. It looks like an aunt picking up a baby and closing a door.

The world doesn't always need a king in the moment. Sometimes it just needs someone who walks toward the crib.
