Context
Persia, year three of King Xerxes — the most powerful man in the known world, and he wants everyone to know it. He throws a six-month flex of an open bar for every official in 127 provinces, then caps it with a seven-day banquet in the palace garden. White linen, gold goblets, wine by royal decree.
Queen Vashti is hosting her own banquet for the women in another wing. Two separate parties. Hold onto that detail.
Story
Day seven. The king is, in the Bible's own words, merry with wine, surrounded by every man with a title in the empire. He gets an idea. He sends seven eunuchs to fetch his wife, wearing her royal crown, so the officials can see how beautiful she is. Come parade yourself for a room full of drunk men who answer to your husband.
Vashti reads the room.
"She refused to come."
No speech. No explanation recorded. The palace goes dead silent, because nobody refuses Xerxes. The king panics, pulls his advisors into emergency session, and his real fear spills out: if the queen can say no, every woman in 127 provinces will think she can too. So they strip her crown, banish her, and write it into law that can never be undone.
What We Learn
The Bible never tells us if Vashti believed in God. She probably didn't. But the first woman in a book named after a different woman refuses to make her body the punchline of someone else's party.
Sometimes the cost of no gets paid in full, on the spot, and nobody throws you a parade for it. She still said it.
