Sleeping Through It

Context

Haman is the second most powerful man in Persia, and he has one problem: a Jewish exile named Mordecai who won't bow to him. So Haman builds a seventy-five-foot gallows in his backyard and plans to ask the king's permission to use it.

That's the night this story turns.

Story

The king can't sleep. Of all the things a Persian king could do at 2 a.m., he asks a servant to read him the royal records, the most boring document in the empire. The servant reads, and reads, and lands on a five-year-old footnote: the time Mordecai overheard a plot and saved the king's life. Never rewarded. Forgotten.

By morning Haman shows up early to ask about the gallows. The king sees him first and asks what should be done for the man the king wants to honor. Haman, the most fragile ego in scripture, assumes it's him. He goes big: royal robe, the king's own horse, a parade through the city square.

Then the king says: perfect, go do all of that, for Mordecai the Jew.

Haman spends the next hour walking his enemy through the city on the king's horse, shouting his praises, with the gallows still standing in his own backyard.

What We Learn

Mordecai didn't ask for any of it. He went to bed still under a death sentence, with a wooden frame visible from his window. He didn't know about the insomnia, the diary, the conversation at dawn. He just kept doing the thing he always did, showing up, refusing to bow.

And while he slept, an empire was being rearranged on his behalf.
