Context

Jesus tells a story about a boss leaving town and handing three servants more money than they have probably ever touched. A talent is not a skill here; it is a fortune, roughly twenty years of wages for a working man.

The amounts are different from the start. Five, two, and one are given according to each servant's ability, which means this is not a story about equal starting lines. It is about what each person does with the trust placed in their hands.

Story

The first servant puts five talents to work and comes back with ten. The second starts with two and comes back with four. Different piles, same instinct: they move with what they have.

"Well done, good and faithful servant. You were faithful with a little, I'll put you in charge of a lot. Come share your master's happiness."

Then the third servant arrives with the exact one talent he received. He hid it in the ground because fear convinced him that the safest move was the faithful one. The master is not impressed. The talent gets taken from him and given to the servant with ten.

The thing he buried to protect is the thing he loses.

What We Learn

This parable does not ask whether your starting pile looks impressive. It asks whether fear has talked you into burying what was entrusted to you.

Faithfulness is not measured against someone else's five talents. It is measured by whether your own hands ever opened.
