Context
Jesus is eating with the people the religious crowd has already labeled lost causes. Tax collectors, sinners, the wrong table, the wrong guest list. The Pharisees grumble, so Jesus answers with a parable about a shepherd whose math makes no practical sense.
Story
A man has a hundred sheep, and one wanders off. The ninety-nine are still there, still valuable, still the safer bet. But the shepherd leaves them in open country and goes after the one that got lost.
He doesn't run the numbers. He searches the rocks and ravines until he finds it, and when he does, he doesn't scold it back into line. He lifts it onto his shoulders and carries it home.
"Celebrate with me. I found my lost sheep."
Then the party starts over one sheep out of a hundred, and Jesus says heaven feels that kind of joy when one person comes home.
What We Learn
We assume wandering lowers our value. We picture God doing responsible math, protecting the ninety-nine and writing off the one who made the mess.
But the shepherd in this story refuses that kind of accounting. He does not love the ninety-nine less. He just will not round you down.
