Weeping Turns to Feast

Context

These are the returned exiles. Their grandparents were hauled off to Babylon, their parents grew up there, and they came back to a city that was a pile of rubble with a memory problem. Nehemiah has just finished the wall. The stones are barely cool.

Before they rebuild anything else, they ask for one thing. They ask Ezra to bring the Book — the Law of Moses, which most of them have never heard read straight through in their own language, in their own city.

Story

Ezra climbs a wooden platform built just for this and opens the scroll. From dawn until midday the whole crowd stands and listens, the Levites translating as he goes. And then something nobody planned for starts happening. The people start weeping — grown men, mothers, kids who feel the room go heavy. They are hearing what they were supposed to be, and the gap.

Nehemiah clocks the room. He doesn't scold them. He says today is holy, so go eat the rich food, drink the sweet drinks, and send portions to whoever has nothing prepared. Even the joy comes with a guest list. Then the line nobody saw coming.

"Do not be grieved, for the joy of the LORD is your strength."

So they go. They eat, they drink, they carry plates to the ones who had none. The weeping turned into a feast — not because the weight got lighter, but because someone named what the weight was for.

What We Learn

A lot of us read scripture braced, waiting for the part where we get told off. But the conviction here wasn't the trap. It was the door.

Joy isn't the opposite of weeping. Sometimes it's what weeping turns into when the words finally land. If they landed today, you don't have to stay in the square crying. Go bring a plate to someone with nothing prepared.
