Context

A lawyer tests Jesus with the question behind every loophole: who counts as my neighbor? He already knows the command to love God and love neighbor, but he wants the boundary marked clearly.

In that world, the boundary is tight. Your neighbor is your own people, and Samaritans sit on the wrong side of the line.

Story

Jesus sends a man down the dangerous road from Jerusalem to Jericho. Robbers strip him, beat him, and leave him half dead in the dirt.

A priest sees him and crosses away. A Levite gets close enough to look, then keeps walking too. The expected helpers step around the crisis like it is not their problem.

Then the wrong-team stranger arrives.

The Samaritan sees the man and stops. He treats the wounds with oil and wine, wraps him himself, puts him on his own animal, and walks him to an inn.

whatever else he needs, put it on me. I'll cover it when I'm back.

He pays for a man who would probably never have shared his table. When Jesus asks who was a neighbor, the lawyer can only answer, the one who showed him mercy.

What We Learn

Jesus does not let neighbor stay a category we sort people into. He makes it something mercy does with its hands.

The scary part is how reasonable the excuses can sound. The priest and Levite had places to be and rules to keep, but a man almost died in the gap.

Mercy just kneels down.
