Context

Samaria is the capital of the northern kingdom — half of God's chosen people, with their own kings, their own temples, their own version of worship. They're rich, connected, doing fine on paper. 2 Kings 17 is the chapter where it all comes apart, and the brutal part is how reasonable every single step looked at the time.

Story

It starts generations earlier. A king builds two golden calves so nobody has to make the long trip to Jerusalem. Just convenience. The next king keeps them. And the next. A marriage to a foreign princess brings Baal worship in as part of a trade deal. Shrines go up on every hill. Prophet after prophet gets ignored.

By the time it gets to child sacrifice and mediums, the text stops narrating and just diagnoses it.

"they would not listen, but were stiff-necked, like their ancestors, who did not trust in the Lord their God."

The compromise wasn't new. It was inherited. Each generation added one more brick to a wall they didn't even remember building. So in 722 BC the Assyrians come, the siege lasts three years, the city falls, and the ten tribes are scattered for good.

What We Learn

Nobody woke up one morning and decided to abandon God. It was a calf for convenience, a marriage for trade, a shrine because the hill was closer. Each step, on its own, was defensible.

Collapse is almost never one decision. It's the slow accumulation of the ones you didn't think counted.

What are you nodding along to right now because it's just easier?
