The Slow Drift

Context

Everyone remembers Solomon for the wisdom. The dream where God says ask me anything. The two women fighting over a baby. A court packed with dignitaries who came just to hear him talk.

What people forget is how it ended. The same king, by his last chapter, is quietly running a side religion for nearly every god in the region. Not a sudden fall. A drift.

Story

The whole thing turns on one small word in 1 Kings 11. However. Solomon loved God. However, he also loved a thousand foreign women, most of them political marriages, each one a treaty with a neighboring kingdom.

His wife from Moab wants to keep worshiping Chemosh? He builds her a high place. Ammon wants Molech? Sure. Sidon wants Astoreth? Done. A hill outside Jerusalem, within walking distance of the temple he built for the Lord, smoke rising from one shrine after another.

He says yes to one wife, one altar, one diplomatic favor, then yes again, until the skyline has changed and nobody can remember when it started. God appears to him twice and Solomon still doesn't change course. Then God shows up with the verdict.

"Since this is your attitude, and you have not kept my covenant, I will most certainly tear the kingdom away from you."

The smartest king ever fumbled the entire empire, and he did it one small compromise at a time.

What We Learn

We talk about big falls like earthquakes. But nobody who has actually fallen describes it that way. They describe a hundred small turns.

You can be wise and drifting at the same time. The drifting feels like nothing. It feels like keeping the peace, being reasonable, accommodating the people you love.

The big collapse always rents space in the small yeses.
