The Seat Gets Given

Context

David is dying, and nobody has officially said who comes next. His fourth son, Adonijah, is now the oldest living son — gorgeous, and a father who never once crossed him. So Adonijah does the math himself.

Story

He gets chariots, horsemen, fifty men to run ahead of him in the street. Then he throws himself a coronation party at a spring outside the city — sheep, oxen, a guest list that reads like a leaked save-the-date. But watch who he leaves off it: Nathan the prophet, the king's bodyguard, and his own brother Solomon.

That's not an oversight. That's a hit list disguised as a guest list.

Nathan clocks it and goes straight to Solomon's mother. Bathsheba walks into the dying king's bedroom and reminds him what he promised. David sits up and gives one order: put Solomon on my own mule, anoint him, blow the trumpet. The city shouts so loud the ground shakes — three quarters of a mile from where Adonijah's party is still on the entrees.

They hear the noise. A messenger runs in with the news. The guests stand up, terrified, and scatter. Adonijah is left at his own banquet with no guests, running to grab the horns of the altar.

"Adonijah didn't lose the throne in the moment Solomon was anointed. He lost it the moment he started acting like it was already his."

What We Learn

He wasn't even wrong about being next in line. He just couldn't wait to be given the seat — he had to take it.
