Context

James and John are inner circle. Brothers, fishermen, two of the twelve who left their boats and never looked back. Jesus has just told all of them, out loud, that he's heading to Jerusalem to be arrested, mocked, and killed.

That's what he said. Here's what these two heard.

Story

They pull Jesus aside, just the two of them, and ask him to promise them whatever they want. When he asks what that is, they go for it: one seat on his right, one on his left, in his glory. The man described his own execution, and they heard "glory" and started picking chairs.

It's the org-chart conversation. The boss says I'm walking into something brutal, and the senior managers ask who gets the corner offices when it's over.

The other ten find out and they're furious. Not because James and John were wrong, but because they didn't think of it first. So Jesus sits all twelve down and names what greatness actually is.

"Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant. Whoever wants to be first must be slave of all."

What We Learn

James and John weren't villains. They believed in Jesus and wanted to be close to him. They just defined close as a seating chart.

We do the same thing. We want to be near him and we want the corner office too.

Greatness in his kingdom isn't a promotion. It's a posture. The towel, the basin, the job nobody's fighting for.
