The Drawer She Closed

Context

Sarah is ninety. Her husband is ninety-nine. And the son God promised them twenty-five years ago still hasn't come. She used to want it loud, used to pray about it, even tried to engineer it herself once and it went sideways. By now she has done the quiet thing you do when wanting something hurts too much. She put the hope in a drawer she doesn't open anymore.

Story

It's the middle of the day. Three strangers show up at the tent, and one of them — the text quietly tells us this one is the Lord — says he'll be back next year and Sarah will have a son. She hears it from behind the tent flap and laughs inside herself. A dry, private, ninety-year-old laugh, the kind you do when something is so far past possible that disappointment doesn't even bother showing up.

"Is anything too hard for the Lord?"

He doesn't shame the laugh. He names it, and promises anyway. I see you laughed. I'm still going to do it.

What We Learn

There's a specific ache in hearing a yes after you've already grieved the no. It almost feels like a trick — why now, why after I finally got quiet about it.

Maybe that's the part. Maybe God meets you in the drawer.
