The Door Is Always There

Context

Two brothers, the first two in the whole human story. Cain works the dirt his parents got kicked out of paradise for. Abel keeps sheep. Same parents, same dinner table, same God they grew up hearing about.

Both bring an offering. Same idea, same God, same Tuesday. And you can already feel the comparison forming before either one has done anything wrong.

Story

Abel brings the best of his flock, the fat portions, the firstborn. Cain brings some of his crops. Just some. Whatever was around. God is into one offering and not the other, and Cain's face falls, that specific quiet you go when your sibling gets praised for something you also tried at.

God doesn't scold him. He pulls Cain aside and asks a question instead, then says one of the most haunting lines in the Bible.

"Sin is crouching at your door. It wants you. But you have to rule over it."

That's a warning. That's a chance. Cain doesn't take it. He invites Abel out to a field, and in the field he kills him. The first murder in history is between brothers, over an offering, over comparison. Then God comes looking, and Cain plays dumb, like he can hide from the one who already knows.

What We Learn

God didn't reject Cain. He rejected the offering, then warned him about what was coming for him next.

Cain had real options. Ask his brother what he did differently. Bring a better offering next time. Just sit with the discomfort of being second for one afternoon. Instead he made Abel pay for a feeling that was never Abel's fault.

The door is always there. Even right now.
