Go Forward

Context

Egypt let them go. The plagues did their work, Pharaoh broke, and a whole nation of former slaves walked out the front door with their gold, their goats, and their kids. They're free. That's the part everyone remembers.

Here's the part nobody tells you. Freedom and safety are not the same thing. They walk out of slavery straight into a dead end — water in front, desert on both sides, and a king behind them who just changed his mind.

Story

Pharaoh wakes up, does the math on his lost workforce, and comes tearing across the desert with six hundred chariots. The Israelites are camped by the water with no weapons, no army, just babies and livestock and old people. Then someone looks back and sees the dust cloud growing on the horizon.

The panic hits. They round on Moses, begging for a refund on their freedom — twenty-four hours out and already homesick for their chains. Moses tells them to stand still and watch. But God interrupts with something stranger.

"Why are you crying out to me? Tell the people to go forward."

Forward is water. Forward is drowning. The path doesn't exist yet, and the instruction is to move toward it anyway. Then the wind blows all night, and by morning there's dry ground between two walls of water. They cross, the army charges in behind them, and the sea closes over the chariots.

What We Learn

They didn't get a path and then walk. They got the command to walk while the path was still impossible.

Most of us are waiting at the edge for the sea to open first. We want the road, then we'll go. We want proof, then we'll trust. But the wind blew all night, in the dark, before anyone could see a thing.

You don't always get the path before the next step.
