Context

Moses is forty and stuck between two worlds. He's the adopted son of the most powerful woman in Egypt — palace-raised, royalty with a press team — but he knows he came from the Hebrew slave class doing the actual building. One day he can't sit with it anymore.

Story

He's out walking and sees an Egyptian beating a Hebrew. Something snaps. He looks left, looks right, no witnesses — and kills the man, buries him in the sand. Like that fixes anything.

The next day he tries to break up two Hebrews fighting, still playing rescuer. One of them turns on him.

"Who made you ruler and judge over us? You gonna kill me like you killed that Egyptian?"

Somebody saw. By morning Pharaoh knows. The man who was supposed to be the rescuer becomes the most wanted fugitive in Egypt. He runs to Midian, sits by a well with nowhere left to go, and ends up a shepherd for forty more years.

What We Learn

Moses tried to free his people in one impulsive afternoon and it cost him four decades watching wool grow. But when God shows up at the burning bush, he doesn't pick palace Moses with the resume and the rage. He picks the shepherd.

The wilderness didn't ruin him. It rescued him from who he was about to become.
