Context
Nebuchadnezzar is the king of Babylon. Not a king. The king. He burned Jerusalem's temple and dragged Judah's brightest back in chains, Daniel among them. His city has hanging gardens and walls so thick chariots race on top of them. And he's been told, more than once, that none of it is technically his.
He keeps not hearing that part.
Story
One night a dream rattles him. A giant tree feeding the whole earth, and a voice from heaven saying chop it down, leave the stump, let the man's mind become an animal's for seven seasons. His magicians can't touch it. Daniel can. The tree is you, he says. You're going to lose your mind until you admit heaven rules, not you.
Twelve months later the king is on his palace roof, looking out over his skyline.
"Is this not the great Babylon I have built, by my mighty power, for the glory of my majesty?"
The word is still in his mouth when the sentence drops. He's on all fours in his own garden, eating grass, hair like feathers, for seven years. Then one day he lifts his eyes toward heaven, and his mind comes back.
What We Learn
Pride doesn't break you all at once. It just keeps telling you the empire is yours, until the day it isn't.
What undoes him isn't the seven years on all fours. It's the rooftop sentence, the exact moment of taking credit. And what brings him back isn't the throne returning. It's the lifting of his eyes.
