Praise First

Context

Daniel is a Jewish kid deported to Babylon after Nebuchadnezzar leveled Jerusalem, then groomed in the king's elite training program — new pagan name, mandatory wine, a curriculum built to dissolve his identity. By chapter two he's a junior consultant in the wise-men department, working under the most powerful and most paranoid man on earth.

Story

The king has a dream that rattles him, so he calls in his whole advisory board with an impossible demand: tell me what I dreamed, and what it means. Not just the meaning. The dream itself. When nobody can, he orders every wise man executed — junior staff included, Daniel included, though Daniel wasn't even in the room.

A soldier shows up at Daniel's door with a sword. Daniel doesn't panic. He asks the king for time, then goes home and gathers his three friends to pray — not for rescue, for information. That night the dream comes to him in a vision: a statue of gold, silver, bronze, iron and clay, struck by a rock cut without human hands.

His first move isn't to sprint to the palace. He stops and worships. Then he stands before the king and sets the credit straight before describing a single detail.

"There's no wise man on earth who can do this. But there's a God in heaven who reveals mysteries."

He tells Nebuchadnezzar the dream down to the metals, and the king who just ordered the execution gets off his throne and bows.

What We Learn

We talk about faith like it's the thing you grab in the crisis. But the crisis only borrows from the account you've been quietly making deposits in.

The miracle isn't that Daniel got the dream. It's that when his worst hour arrived, he already knew who to call.
