Context
Martha runs a household in Bethany, just outside Jerusalem. She's the older sister, the one who opens the door and keeps the place running. Back then a guest was sacred. You fed them, you served them, you didn't sit until they were taken care of. And the guest who just walked in is Jesus.
Story
So Martha does what Martha does. She gets to work, sleeves up, basically a one-woman catering company for a teacher who keeps showing up with twelve hungry friends. Her sister Mary just sits at Jesus' feet, listening, not lifting a single dish.
Martha keeps glancing over. The clatter gets a little louder. Then she snaps and walks right up to Jesus.
"Lord, don't you care that my sister left me to do all the work? Tell her to help me."
Jesus doesn't take the bait. He says her name twice, soft, the way you'd say it to someone you love who's spinning out. Only one thing is needed, he tells her. Mary has chosen what is better. Nobody gets sent to the kitchen.
What We Learn
Martha wasn't wrong to serve. She was wrong about what the moment required. Sometimes the most loving thing you can do for someone is sit down and actually receive them.
Worship isn't always the one kneeling. Sometimes it's the one who put the spoon down.
When did you last sit down long enough to listen?
