Context
Israel has been ground down by the Philistines for forty years. In a town called Zorah live Manoah and his wife, and they have no children. Scripture gives him a name. It gives her a job description.
That is the setup an angel walks into.
Story
She is out in a field, alone, when a stranger shows up. Not the husband. Her. He tells her the barren years are over: a son is coming, a Nazirite from the womb, the one who starts pushing Philistia back. Then he is gone.
She runs home and tells Manoah everything. Manoah prays for the messenger to come back so they can learn how to raise the boy, even though she already told him exactly how. God sends the angel a second time, to her, in the field again.
When the angel steps into the altar flame and rides it into the sky, Manoah panics that they are going to die. His wife is the one who keeps her feet.
"If God wanted us dead he wouldn't have accepted the offering. He wouldn't have told us about the baby."
What We Learn
The husband has a name in the text. The wife does not. But the messenger came to her, twice, and when the husband lost it, she held the theology steady.
Sometimes the person heaven takes most seriously is the one your culture forgot to write down.
