Check the Rope Twice

Context

Gideon already has his orders. God told him plainly: he's the one who'll rescue Israel from an army that's been stripping the land bare for seven years. The problem isn't the promise. It's that Gideon, when we meet him, is hiding in a winepress threshing wheat where nobody can see. God calls him a mighty warrior. Gideon basically asks if God has the right address.

He's heard it. He's been told. And he still isn't sure.

Story

So he runs a test. He lays a wool fleece on the threshing floor overnight and prays: if the ground is dry by morning but the wool is soaked with dew, then he'll know. Morning comes. He wrings the fleece out and gets a whole bowl of water. The ground around it is bone dry. Sign delivered, clear as anything.

You'd think that settles it. It doesn't.

That same night Gideon's already drafting the follow-up. He prays again, wincing, and asks for one more — this time keep the fleece dry and soak the ground instead.

"Please don't be angry with me. Let me ask just one more time."

Morning two: the fleece is dry, the floor is drenched. He got it both times, exactly as ordered. And God never once snaps. No lightning, no "how dare you doubt me." He just does it again, quietly, both nights.

What We Learn

We talk about faith like it's a single dramatic leap. But Gideon already believed enough to lay the fleece down. He just needed to be sure before he risked everything — and God let him check.

Faith isn't always the leap. Sometimes it's the person who needs to check the rope twice.

Maybe the asking again was never the problem.
