Context
A woman in purple is sitting by a river outside Philippi on a Sabbath morning. Her name is Lydia, and she runs a textile business in purple cloth — the Hermes of first-century fabric, dyed from crushed sea snails and sold to senators. She has her own house, her own money, her own household.
There's no synagogue in Philippi, so a handful of God-fearing women gather by the water to pray. Lydia is one of them.
Story
Paul shows up, sits down in the posture of a rabbi about to teach, and starts talking. Lydia doesn't interrupt. She doesn't argue. The text says one quiet thing: the Lord opened her heart to respond.
No vision. No earthquake. Just a door swinging open somewhere inside her. She gets baptized on the spot, her whole household with her, and then she pulls the move. She turns to Paul and refuses to take no for an answer.
"If you've judged me faithful to the Lord, come and stay at my house."
So Paul agrees. A wealthy Roman businesswoman has just turned her dining room into the first house church in Europe.
What We Learn
She could have written a check and gone back to her purple-cloth empire. Instead she handed Paul her keys, knowing it could cost her clients, her reputation, her standing with the officials she sold to.
She didn't wait for a church to exist before she belonged to one. She built the room it could grow inside.
