Called Brother

Context

Saul is the most dangerous man on this road, and you need to feel that before he falls. He trained under Gamaliel, the most respected teacher in Jerusalem, basically the Ivy-League law professor of his day. He held the coats while they stoned Stephen. Then he went door to door, dragging believers to prison.

Now he's a week into a hundred-and-thirty-mile walk to Damascus, arrest warrants in his bag, hunting more of them. He is not slowing down. He is expanding the operation.

Story

It's the middle of an ordinary, hot day. Then the sky opens, a light slams him into the dirt, and a voice asks why he's persecuting it. Saul, flat on his face, asks who's talking. The answer reframes everything.

"I am Jesus, the one you're persecuting."

Not the followers. Me. Every door Saul kicked in, Jesus counted as a hand laid on himself. The light leaves him blind, and for three days the man who saw God so clearly is led around by the hand, with nothing in his head but a name he can't stop hearing.

Across town, a regular disciple named Ananias gets told to go heal him. He pushes back, basically saying, do you know who that is. God doesn't argue. He says go, this man is my chosen instrument. So Ananias walks to a house he'd normally avoid, and the first word out of his mouth is the one nobody expects: brother. The scales fall, Saul can see, and the recruiter for the prosecution becomes the lead witness for the defense.

What We Learn

We love a redemption story when we're the one who got the light. It's harder when the breakthrough belongs to the person who made our life miserable.

The hardest thing God asks Ananias isn't to forgive from a distance. It's to go put his hands on the man and call him brother, while the fear is still in his chest. God doesn't ask him to feel safe first. He just asks him to go.

• Saul didn't earn his way onto the team. He got drafted mid-crime, face down in the dirt.

• Grace isn't a reward for the people who deserved it. It's the thing that walks toward the people who didn't.
