I Am Joseph

Context

Joseph is thirty-something now, running the food supply of the most powerful empire on earth. He has a wife, two sons, an Egyptian name, and a title that translates to second-in-command of the whole kingdom.

Then the famine hits everywhere. Including Canaan. Including the family that, twenty-some years ago, threw him in a pit and sold him to a passing caravan for twenty pieces of silver.

Story

The brothers ride into Egypt because there is no food anywhere else, and they bow low before the man who controls every grain in the country. They don't know it's him. He knows it's them.

Joseph could throw them in a dungeon and let them rot. He could forgive them on the spot and send them home with full bags. He picks a third option. He accuses them of being spies, keeps one as collateral, and demands they bring back his only full brother, Benjamin.

When they finally come back with Benjamin, Joseph hides his silver cup in the boy's sack, then sends his steward chasing them down. The cup falls out. By the rules, Benjamin now belongs to Pharaoh's house. The brothers have walked away from a brother before.

But Judah, the same Judah who first proposed selling Joseph, steps forward and offers himself in the boy's place.

"Take me. Don't take the boy. It will kill our father."

That is the moment Joseph has been building toward. He clears the room, and in a language he hasn't spoken in twenty years, he finally says his name.

What We Learn

The tests were never cruelty or a power trip. Joseph didn't want to ruin the men who ruined him. He wanted to know if they'd actually changed.

Forgiveness isn't pretending nothing happened. It's making sure something different happens next.
