The Whirlwind Answers

Context

Job is the wealthy, blameless man who loses everything in a single afternoon — his ten children, his livestock, his health. Then he sits in ashes for thirty-five chapters, debating his own catastrophe with three friends and demanding that God explain why.

He wants his day in court. He wants a reason.

Story

When God finally shows up, it isn't in a still small voice. It's a storm. God answers Job out of a whirlwind, and the first thing out of his mouth isn't comfort — it's a question. Then another. About seventy of them, back to back, for four chapters.

Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth. Have you seen the storehouses of snow. Can you bind the chains of the Pleiades. God walks Job through a zoo of wild, useless animals and two creatures Job has no jurisdiction over, and never once explains the suffering.

Job came in with a legal argument. He got a natural history exam. And somewhere in it, he stops talking and lays his hand on his mouth.

"I had heard of you by the hearing of the ear, but now my eye sees you."

He didn't get an answer. He got a face.

What We Learn

Meeting God doesn't always mean getting your questions answered. Sometimes it means getting them out-sized — dwarfed by the One you were yelling at.

An explanation is something you can fold up and carry in your pocket. A presence is something you have to keep standing in front of.

The whirlwind didn't answer Job. It showed up.
