The Wrong Hand

Context

Israel has been under Moab for eighteen years, long enough for a whole generation to grow up with occupation as normal. The king over them is Eglon, and the deliverer God raises up is not a prince or a general. It's Ehud from Benjamin, marked by one detail the room would overlook: he's left-handed.

Story

Ehud carries Israel's tribute into Moab's palace, basically paying the power that keeps them crushed. Before he goes, he hides a short double-edged sword on his right thigh, the side guards don't think to check.

He sends his delegation away, turns back alone, and tells Eglon he has a secret message. The king clears the room. Ehud steps close.

"I have a message from God for you."

The violent moment is brief. The rescue is where the focus lands: Ehud locks the door behind him, the servants wait too long in awkward politeness, and deliverance moves while Moab doesn't realize its grip has already broken.

Ehud reaches the hill country, blows the trumpet, and Israel cuts off the Jordan crossing. Eighteen years of occupation breaks in one afternoon, and the land rests for eighty years.

What We Learn

God reaches for the person everyone else files under wrong, inconvenient, or easy to miss.

The thing that doesn't fit may not be the thing disqualifying you. Sometimes it's the opening nobody thought to guard.
