Just Say the Word

Context

Capernaum, first century. Rome runs the town and the rules. A centurion commands a hundred soldiers, with the whole empire standing behind him. Jews and Romans share a town but not a table.

Then this officer does the unthinkable. He walks up to a wandering Jewish rabbi and asks for help.

Story

His servant is at home, paralyzed and suffering. He lays it out plain, no speech. Jesus offers to come and heal him. But the centurion stops him at the door, saying his own house isn't good enough for the carpenter to enter.

"Just say the word and my servant will be healed."

He runs orders for a living. He says go, and they go. He recognizes a chain of command when he sees one, and he's clocked Jesus as someone whose orders run straight up to the only desk that matters. Jesus turns to the crowd and says he hasn't found faith like this in all of Israel. Same hour, the servant is healed.

What We Learn

The disciples walked with Jesus, watched the miracles, slept in the same rooms. The man with the cleanest faith in the room is the outsider who'd known him ten minutes.

Faith isn't proximity. It's recognizing authority when you finally see it.
