Two Words at the Booth

Context

Capernaum is a fishing town with one main road and one Roman customs booth. The man at that booth is the most-hated person in the neighborhood. His name is Levi.

He's a Jew collecting taxes for the empire occupying his own country, and he sets his own rates above what Rome requires, pocketing the rest. So he isn't just a collaborator. He's a wealthy one. Nobody eats with him. Nobody invites him over.

Story

It's a regular workday. Levi is at the booth with his coins and ledgers and a line of furious people. Jesus has already pulled together fishermen with calloused hands and clean reputations. His disciple roster is basically set.

Then he stops at the tax booth. He looks at Levi. Two words.

"Follow me."

No interview. No "let's talk about your past first." And Levi gets up. He doesn't haggle, doesn't ask for a week to wrap up affairs. It's the shortest call story in the whole Bible.

Then Levi throws a dinner for all his tax-collector friends, and the Pharisees lose their minds. Jesus tells them it's not the healthy who need a doctor. It's the sick.

What We Learn

We tend to think being chosen happens after we get our act together. After the resignation. After the apology tour. After we finally look the part.

Jesus didn't wait for Levi to clean up. He offered him the table before he'd done a single thing to earn it.

Being chosen isn't the reward for the cleanup. It's what starts it.
